Senior Pastor's Column for November
Senior Pastor's Column for Nov.

There is an imperative that permeates both the Old and New Testament: “Remember!” “Don’t forget!”  “Reflect!”  The reason why this command is repeated often is that we are, as humans, inclined to forget. As we go about our daily lives we often forget the grace and love God bestowed upon us and who God is.

So, I urge you to remember the words of our guest speaker from Garden Presbyterian Church’s 22nd anniversary revival.  On the first day, the speaker quoted from James 5:7-9 in a sermon titled “The Coming of the Lord is at Hand,” reminding us that early Christians would shout out “Maranatha!” amidst their trials and difficulties.  As we are pilgrims in this world figuratively, or immigrants in a foreign country literally, we need to overcome hardships in a similar manner with great expectations of Christ’s imminent return. We must learn to let go of the little annoyances in life.

In the morning service on the second day – the speaker preached from Isaiah 43:1-3 under the sermon title “You are Mine,” noting that God accepts us as we are, with all our fragilities and still utilizes us through our brokenness.  Thus, we should put aside any sense of inferiority and live in Christ with pride in knowing that God is our Father.  We must depend fully on Him, taking hold of the truth that He is in absolute control over our lives.

In the evening service on the second day – the speaker shared from Acts 1:8 in a sermon entitled “By the Spirit Alone,” reminding us of a critical need for being filled with the Holy Spirit to obtain victory.  We can have the otherwise extinguished fire of the Holy Spirit restored in our life through an active life of worship, being renewed in the Word and singing praises in response. He urged us to seek and use the gift of love, over all the various gifts of the Holy Spirit. With love being the highest of all spiritual gifts, God bestows that gift on us.

During the first service on Sunday, on the third day of our revival, the sermon titled “The Meaning of Trials” came from James 1:2-4.  We are to count it as joy when God presents us with trials of various kinds, knowing that such trials are beneficial to us.  During the second service, he preached on how the church should be like a house hosting a feast – as we see in John 2:1-11.  We are to produce a festival-like atmosphere in which miracles happen when we obey God’s word.  The church is a place where we can come together, experience the Lord as He is with us, obey His word, and experience His miracles.

I had the opportunity to spend five days with our guest speaker. I saw and felt a genuine sense of Christ’s love through him.  While at times it gets lonely as a pastor, I saw that he embraced a heart full of love as he extended grace to everyone around him.

I committed myself to be more loving, especially considering the importance of befriending the marginalized, the sick, the weak, and the poor.  This is, after all, exactly what Jesus did. My desire and hope is that Garden Presbyterian Church would do the same.

As autumn ends and the weather becomes cold… Perhaps our hearts will be warm.  After all, this is a season of thanksgiving.

With Thanksgiving Day approaching, a day when the Puritans fled to the New World in search of religious freedom, my hope is that we will gain a thankful spirit. The puritans gave thanks to God for protecting them through their trials.  Even when they lacked a multitude of material things, they were thankful for an opportunity to worship God freely. We too need to be thankful, even when we feel we are lacking. We need to cling to God’s promises, His providence.  We must remember His grace and His everlasting love.  We should take a moment to reflect on it.  We must not forget.  We must rejoice in all things.

Envision the parallel as parents: watching our children mature. As our children grow and remember the love and grace extended from us as parents, they begin to show us gratitude. Similarly, we know God is moved when we are thankful to Him… for everything He’s done.

From a Slave of our Lord,
Pastor Nathan Hahn
